Edith Irene Nichols

December 28, 1926 — March 14, 2023

Edith Irene Nichols passed to her eternal home on March 14, 2023 at Hillside Village of De Soto, KS. Edith, the second child of Edward James “EJ” Emmart and Sadie Marie Geuy, was born December 28, 1926 in Paola, KS where she was a lifelong resident.

Edith attended school in Paola where she graduated from high school in 1944. She then went on to study at Ursuline Academy, where she got an Associate of Arts degree in 1946.

Following her graduation, Edith began working at the Miami County Welfare Office where she met Robert C. “Bob” Nichols. They married on September 2, 1955, making their home in Paola, KS. They had one son, John Robert Nichols. Edith’s career included working at the Paola Free Library, Miami County Clerk’s Office, and the Miami County Appraisers Office.

Edith and Bob were married in the Paola Christian Church, and later joined the First Presbyterian Church of Paola. Edith was an active member of the church, in particular volunteering at the thrift store. Edith was a member of the Shamrock Club for many years. She was also active with the Miami County Historical Society, alongside her husband Bob. Family history became a hobby that she pursued throughout her life. Above all, family was one of the most important aspects of her life.

She is survived by her son, John “Rob” Nichols; granddaughters, Christine Pecinovsky (Jon) and Sarah Nichols, along with their mother Ann Nichols; sister-in-law Rosemary Emmart, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Edward “EJ” & Marie Emmart; husband Robert Nichols; brother Harold Emmart; nephews Ronnie & Eddie Emmart, twin grandsons, George & Edward Nichols; brother and sister-in-laws John & Janeth Lewis.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, March 17, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, 305 North Pearl, Paola, KS 66071. Visitation will be at 10 am immediately followed by the service. A short commitment service will occur at the burial site at the Osawatomie Cemetery.

Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Paola or the Alzheimer’s Association (Heart of America Chapter, 3846 W 75th St, Prairie Village, KS 66208).

Family and friends are encouraged to post their memories and condolences on Edith's tribute wall.
