Earl W. Wood, age 92, of Louisburg, Kansas passed away Friday, February 15, 2013 surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born February 10, 1921 on a farm near Louisburg, Kansas, Earl is the son of Clarence and Grace (Bodenhamer) Wood. He graduated Louisburg High School in 1939. Earl received a commission in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and ultimately flew more than 50 sorties as a B-24 Liberator pilot in the European Theater of Operations. As a result of demonstrated heroism, Earl was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Following the war, Earl returned to Kansas to marry his sweetheart Maxine Roy on June 6, 1945. The couple moved to Louisburg in 1962 where they raised their two sons, David and Greg. Earl spent his career as a body shop manager in Kansas City, Kansas, retiring from Feld Chevrolet in 1982. Earl is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and four siblings, Ola Wood, Wilbur Wood, Nell Selanders, and Vera Gardner. He is survived by his sons, David Wood of Louisburg, and Greg (MaraDona) Wood of Overland Park, as well as four grandchildren, Matt Wood, Amy Dowell, Sarah Karpinski, and Danelle Wisdom, ten great-grandchildren, and six nieces. After retirement, Earl enjoyed camping, family gatherings, wintering in Texas with friends, and caring for his loving wife. He will be remembered for his generosity and extraordinary memory.
