Duane Virgil Sammons, age 59, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Thursday, December 16, 2010, at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas. He was born on Wednesday, May 23, 1951, in Henry County, Iowa, the son of Virgil Richard and Elnora Jane (Krieger) Sammons. He lived in Ottawa since 1972, moving from California. Duane graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He worked twenty-one years as a paint supervisor for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring June 12, 1993, and eight years as an assembler at Ottawa Truck in Ottawa, retiring in October of 2005. Duane served in the United States Army from September 15, 1969 until September 14, 1975, attaining the rank of SP4. He served during the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Army Commendation Medal and Bronze Star Medal. He was a member of Erie Lodge #2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Ottawa. On January 23, 1971, Duane was united in marriage with Gail V. Gross in Lee County, Iowa. They were later divorced. SERVICES: A graveside inurnment service will be held at Highland Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2010. IN STATE: Cremation is planned. Family will meet with friends at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2010. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorial contributions to Arie Lodge #2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067. SURVIVORS INCLUDE: Son –Jason Duane Sammons and his wife, Renea, of Ottawa, Kansas Grandchild-Kole Sammons Grandchild-Kade Sammons Brother-Dean Arthur Sammons of Mt.
