Dr. James A. Eaton, 69, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, 700 Chapel St., Baldwin City, Kansas, 2:00 P.M., Thursday, April 17, 2014. Friends may pay their respects to Dr. Eaton at Dengel Son Mortuary from 1:00 to 9:00 Wednesday. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. James was born on Tuesday, April 25, 1944 in Moberly, Missouri, the son of Orville and Ellen (Brock) Eaton. Dr. Eaton has lived in Ottawa since 1973, moving from Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from Oswego, Kansas High School with the class of 1962 and continued his education at Parsons Junior College, in 1963, for one year. He then attended Southwest College of Optometry, Memphis, Tennessee, with a Doctorate of Optometry in 1967. On June 19, 1980 James was united in marriage with Barbara Pierce in Parsons, Kansas. She survives of their home. Survivors also include his seven children, Jami Replogle and husband Darron of Catoosa, Oklahoma; Dave Eaton and wife Paula of Claremore, Oklahoma; Ryan Eaton and wife Janie also of Claremore; Kimberly Hamrick and husband Jason of Wheatland, Wyoming; Dustin Moore and wife Shelly of Baldwin City, Kansas; Blain Eaton and wife Gretchen of Ottawa; and Sami Eaton of Ottawa; siblings, Mary Ellen Vance and husband Don of Carl Junction, Missouri; Don Eaton and wife Gloria of Altamont, Kansas; Phyllis Walker of Parsons, Kansas; and Joyce Carson and husband Chris also of Parsons; twenty-three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Dr. Eaton owned and operated, James A. Eaton Optometrist, in Ottawa and Baldwin City for thirty-eight years, retiring April 11, 2011. He was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church, Baldwin City; Kansas Optometric Association, and the American Optometric Association. James was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, whose greatest joy was spending time with his family. Along with attending church and his deep love for the Lord, he also enjoyed old tractors, motorcycles, target shooting, and watching college sports. He will be deeply missed and remain in the hearts and thoughts of his family and friends forever.
