Dovie Clara Thompson

February 6, 1923 — September 20, 2017

Dovie Clara McDaniel Thompson, age 94, left her earthly home and entered her eternal home on the morning of Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Dovie was born February 6, 1923 to Leslie and Sarah (Elliott) Swearingen in Rocky Ford, Colorado. On August 13, 1938, she was united in marriage to Joseph Ralph McDaniel. Joseph passed away in Paola on May 29, 1973. She married Ron Thompson and the marriage ended in divorce. She will be remembered for her honest, generous spirit, always thinking of others. She loved her family and was the happiest when she was younger and able to babysit and take care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Whenever they had a ball game or school event, she was there to support them. She loved to take them fishing at Lake Miola. She was also a foster grandparent. Dovie had a long history of working starting in the 1940s, at Braemoore Coat Factory, Shawnee Sportswear and Smith and Company as a seamstress. She had also worked at Osawatomie State Hospital. She retired September 1978 from King Radio in Paola. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Blanche Ayers; three brothers Elmer, George, and Max and a half-brother Ralph. She is survived by her two daughters Barbara (LeRoy) Moore and Shirley Mayo; grandchildren Richard, Micheal and Kenneth Moore, Tammie Daulton, Shellie Hartmann and Willie Mayo IV; great grandchildren Eric and Adam, sons of Micheal Moore and Cindy Moore, Tyler and Curtis, sons of Kenneth and Debbie Moore, Joseph, Wayne, Annie Kerr and Elizabeth Daulton, children of Tammie and Wayne Daulton, Steve Hartmann, son of Shelly Hartmann, Kye and Jayla, children of Willie and Kari Mayo. Dovie has numerous great-great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the nurses and all staff at North Point for the kindness and compassionate care while Dovie was a resident there. Also, thanks to Catholic Community Hospice. In Lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Catholic Community Hospice, 9740 W. 87th St., Overland Park, KS 66212. Visitation will be 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 25, 2017 at Dengel & Son Mortuary, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS. Service will follow. Burial will be in Paola Cemetery.
