Doug was born Friday, June 22, 1956, in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of Donal D. and Geraldine F. (Spring) Horne.
He was a lifelong Pomona resident and graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1974.
On January 26, 1980, Doug was united in marriage to Linda Keller in Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of the home.
Doug and Linda met in 1977. She was a single mom with 3 young children and was hesitant about dating a younger man. Their first date was “cruising Ottawa.” Choosing to go on a date with Doug was a life-changing decision for Linda. Qualities that drew Linda to Doug was how kind and caring he was with her three young children, his love for his family, his humor and his love of music. From their first date on, they remained together. Doug created and maintained a loving home and life for Linda and their children.
Doug was a boiler operator at Hercules Army Ammunition Plant in DeSoto, Kansas from the late 1970’s to the early 1990’s. He was then employed by the Wal-Mart distribution center for twenty-six years as an operations manager, retiring in 2018.
Doug was first and foremost a family man. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. He was not only a wonderful father and mentor, but a friend to his children. He was not a complicated person and gained most of his enjoyment in life surrounded by family and friends. Doug, much like his mom and dad, had an amazing sense of humor and soft heart. He enjoyed his home and took great pride in the home he created. He really enjoyed camping, family holidays, the KC Chiefs and Kansas Jayhawks basketball. Doug was always guided by his selfless nature that put the needs and feelings of others before his own.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wayne Horne; and brother-in-law, Bill Hewitt.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; children, Jody Mitchell (Rebecca) of Westport, Kentucky, Jennifer Anderson of Topeka, Kansas, Jason Mitchell (Anne) of Eudora, Kansas, Josh Horne of Omaha, Nebraska, and Jill Horne of Ottawa, Kansas; sister Norma Hewitt of Rantoul, Kansas; grandchildren, Robbi Mitchell, Cullen Smith, Sam Anderson, Grace Anderson, Aubrey Smith, Bayleigh Mitchell, Ella Mitchell, and Jack Tate; great-granddaughter Ellie Workman.
