Doug A. Downey, 68, of Wellsville, Kansas, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Family will meet with friends from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Funeral service will immediately follow at 10:30 A.M., at the mortuary. Cremation will follow the service. Doug was born Thursday, August 21, 1947, in Paola, Kansas, the son of Herbert and Mary Maxine (Savidge) Downey. He was a near lifelong Kansas resident, except for living in Spring, Texas, in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Doug returned to Kansas living in Gardner, Ottawa, and rural Wellsville. Doug was united in marriage with Brenda Bruner in Ottawa. They later divorced after 24 years of marriage. Survivors include his adopted daughter, Tobbie Hurley of Olathe; brother, Roger Downey of Vassar; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Mary Maxine Downey. Doug worked for his uncle, Don Downey, clearing lots for residential homes in the 1970s to early 1980s in Spring, Texas. He was employed with Horner Construction of Gardner, where he worked many projects in NE Kansas and on the Clinton spillway. From 2004 to 2006 he cleared fence lines and ponds. He was of the Lutheran faith. He enjoyed fishing, small projects of woodworking, and cutting firewood.
