Dorothy M. Smiley

Dorothy Marie Smiley, 96, of Ottawa, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at Rock Creek of Ottawa. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, December 20, 2019 at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Internment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Dorothy was born July 23, 1923 in Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter of Archie and May (Burgoon) Bell. She was a lifelong Ottawa resident and attended Ottawa schools through March of her 12th grade year then graduated from high school in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dorothy was united in marriage to Charles H. Smiley September 25, 1941 in Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death on August 18, 2000. She is survived by her two daughters, Charlotte M. Rocker of Ottawa and Neva M. Smiley of Lawrence; brother, Archie Junior Bell of Mesquite, Nevada; sister- in-law, Betty Bell of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren, Darren Wayne Rocker, Warren Rocker both of Ottawa; Vickie Lynn Sutton (Allen) of Pomona; two great grandchildren, Lacey Joey Marie Sutton and Jaron Wayne Stigall. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, Eugene L Bell; infant brother, Ernest Dean Bell; sister-in-law, Irene Bell; and son-in-law, Vernon Rocker. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, assisting with Sunday school classes, a past member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and Extension Homemakers Unit. Dorothy worked many years housekeeping, washing and ironing for others. She loved working puzzles, collecting bells and always kept a diary. Her greatest enjoyment was her family, being active in their various activities and the Scouts organization.
