Dorothy M. Parkin, 84, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at Richmond Healthcare & Rehabilitation. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, February 27, 2017, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the mortuary. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Dorothy was born Thursday, June 30, 1932, in Marshall, Arkansas, the daughter of Coy and Hester (Jackson) Kelley. In 1951, Dorothy moved to Kansas living in various locations throughout her life including Pomona, Williamsburg, Ottawa, and La Harp, returning to Ottawa, where she made her home until her death. She attended a country school in Marshall, Arkansas, through the seventh grade. Her family moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma, where she continued her schooling. Dorothy was united in marriage to Harold Casady. They later divorced. She married Coburn Parkin, Sr. May 25, 1951, in Burlington, Kansas. He preceded her in death May 19, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Coy and Hester Kelley; two brothers, J.C. Kelley and Kennith Kelley; and sister, Betty Sue Kelley. Survivors include her five children, Gene Casady of Pomona, Sandy Newton of Louisville, Kentucky, Kathryn Doffing and husband Joseph of Wichita, Cobie Parkin and wife Mary Ann of Williamsburg, and Patrick Parkin and wife Pam of Ottawa; eight grandchildren, Christina Ross and husband Kenney of Villa Rica, Georgia, Julie Gaston and husband Jerry of Wichita, Christopher Parkin and wife Katie of Platt City, Missouri, Heath Parkin and wife Rachel of Missoula, Montana, Sarah Nuessen and husband Tim of New Strawn, Heather Wright and husband Dan of Olathe, Hedy Mendenhall and husband Bryan of Wichita, and Matt Doffing and wife Shelbi of Clearwater; and sixteen great-grandchildren. Dorothy was employed as a nurse’s aide for Cedar House Nursing Home for eight years. She continued working in home care for the state of Kansas for thirteen years. She enjoyed playing Bingo and quilting. Dorothy’s greatest joy was her love of family and their time spent together. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Richmond Healthcare Activity Fund c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
