Dorothy Jean Kiser passed away on January 12, 2011, in the presence of her children, at the Kansas City Hospice House, after a courageous battle with cancer. Dorothy was born in Fontana, KS on June 21, 1923 and was the daughter of the former Miami County Sheriff, Edward Schlotman and his wife Della. Her family moved to Paola, where she attended Paola High School, class of 1941. She worked for Hercules Powder Co. at Sunflower Ordinance Plant in Desoto, KS until enlisting in the United States Coast Guard SPARS in 1944. After attending boot camp in West Palm Beach, FL, Dorothy served at the District Coast Guard office in St. Louis, MO until she was reassigned and stationed in the Pacific Theatre, Honolulu, HI until her discharge from the SPARS in 1946. After her discharge, she returned to Paola where she met and married her husband of 62 years, Rex J. Kiser, who had also been discharged from the Army after serving in Europe for three years. They soon opened their own business, Kiser"s Barber Shop, in Paola, which operated for over 40 years. Dorothy was a "stay at home" mom until her two children were in high school, when she returned to work for Union LP Gas and Mid America Propane for 13 years, retiring with her husband, Rex, in 1987. She was a devoted wife and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. Dorothy loved to travel, was a seamstress, a motion picture fan, a devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan and loved music, as she played the piano for most of her life. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Paola and the McDonalds Coffee Club. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Della Schlotman; her husband, Rex J Kiser; a sister, Elizabeth Predmore; a brother, James Schlotman; and grandson, Marc Kiser. Survivors include her daughter Janet Schnoor (Art) of Olathe; son Douglas Kiser (Kim) of Spring Hill; grandson Randy Kiser (Hillary) of Longview, TX; granddaughter Melissa Kiser- (Winston) of Tyler, TX. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their children. Special thanks go out to RN"s Roxanne Alter and Neva Campbell-Lowe, Reuben Rabanal and Chaplain Marcus Rackley from Kansas City Hospice and to the staff at the Kansas City Hospice House. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Miami County Cancer Society or 1st Presbyterian Church of Paola.
