Doris Flake

Doris Marie Flake Doris Marie Flake, 83, was called home to heaven on Tuesday, August 26,2008, from complications arising from Alzheimer's disease. Doris was born in Trading Post, KS, on October 12, 1924, the daughter of John Orlo and Nola (Fields) Allman. A 1943 graduate of Fontana High School, she met the man she knew she would one day marry, Elmer Flake, in 1938. On September 1, 1946, Doris and Elmer were married at her parents' home in Fontana. Their union was blessed with two children, Lillian and Joseph. Doris was a member of First Lutheran Church, in Paola for most of her life. As a member, she participated in the L WML and Mary-Martha Circle. She taught Sunday school while her children were growing up. Doris was also very much involved in many projects that benefited people in need. Doris is survived by her husband of nearly 62 years, Elmer, her daughter Lillian (Thomas) Heuer of Watertown, WI, and son Joseph (Cathy) of Paola. She is also survived by four grandsons, Zachary (Andrea) and Caleb (Mari) Flake and Ryan and Preston Heuer, and two granddaughters, Adrianne and Angela Slaughter. Doris was blessed with five great grandchildren, Liam, Ava, Jayden, Carson and Gabriel. Further survivors include her brother, John Allman, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and her many friends from church and the community. Doris was preceded in death by her parents and two siblings, Esther Fay and Wayne, who died in infancy. A service of Christian burial will be held Friday, August 29,2008, at First Lutheran Church in Paola. Visitation will be at the church from 9:00 until the service beginning at 10:00. Committal will immediately follow at the Debrick Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation or to the charity of one's choice. Penwell-Gable Funeral Home is serving the family.
