Donald R. Higdon, 94, of Williamsburg, Kansas, passed away peacefully Friday, December 8, 2023, at his home.
Services will be held 10:00 am, Friday, December 15, 2023, at Homewood Community Bible Church, Williamsburg, Kansas.
Family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00 pm, Thursday, December 14, 2023, at the church.
Interment Antioch Cemetery of Homewood, Williamsburg, Kansas.
Donald was born Saturday, June 1, 1929, in Rantoul, Kansas, the son of John O. and Elsie (Gregg) Higdon.
He was a lifelong Franklin County resident living in Williamsburg for the last sixty-eight years.
Donald graduated from Lane High School with the class of 1947.
He was united in marriage on October 20, 1949, in Ottawa, Kansas, to Doris Brownlee. She preceded him in death on January 4, 2023.
Donald was employed by A & P Supermarket in Ottawa for twenty-eight years as a produce manager, was an oil field worker in Osawatomie, Kansas, for three years, and worked in maintenance at Franklin Savings for ten years before retiring in 1994.
He served with the United States Marine Corps December 17, 1951, being Honorably discharged on December 3, 1953, serving in the Korean War.
Donald was a member of the Williamsburg Lions Club, the Homewood Community Bible Church, served on the Franklin County Transportation Board, a member of the Power of the Past Antique Engine and Tractor Association, and the Franklin Council on Aging Meals on Wheels.
He liked horses, hunting, and family sporting events. Donald especially loved his grandchildren and family.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife Doris; parents John and Elsie; infant sister; and son-in-law Pat Simmons.
Survivors include daughters Virginia Cook of Williamsburg, Kansas, Cindy Higdon of Osawatomie, Kansas, and Debbie Brown (Keith) of Howard, Kansas; sister Velma Hart of Ottawa, Kansas; sister-in-law Joy Mitchell of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother-in-law Joe Suther; five grandchildren Tara Yost (Jacob) of Topeka, Kansas, Heather Newkirk (Philip) of Neodesha, Kansas, Lucas Simmons (Michelle) of Rose Hill, Kansas, and Megan Higdon of Osawatomie, Kansas, Deanna White (Richard) of Williamsburg, Kansas; ten great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Golden Spur Ministries or Harbor Hospice c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
