Donald L. Howell, 81, of Ottawa, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, February 19, 2018, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 4:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, February 18th at the mortuary. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Donald was born September 16, 1936 in Franklin County, Kansas, the son of Herbert and Kathleen (Stoffer) Howell. He was a lifelong Franklin County resident living in Ottawa and moving in 1968 to Pomona. He graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1954. Donald was united in marriage to Amy May VanLoenen November 25, 1956 in Ottawa. She preceded him in death on May 6, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Kathleen Howell; brother, John Howell; and infant sister, Alice Howell. Survivors include his five children, Robin Howell of Protem, Missouri, Veronica Bowman and significant other Paul Manning of Lansing, Iowa, John Howell and wife Kenna of Fort Worth, Texas, Martha Mundy and husband Butch of Topeka, Kansas, and Sarah Howell of Ottawa; sixteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Donald was a millwright with Farmland Industries in Lawrence from 1960 to 1998. He was a 4H leader and Boy Scouts leader. Donald enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, tinkering in his shop, and liked to winter in south Texas. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
