Donald J. Lickteig, Sr., age 89, of Richmond, Kansas, died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Vintage Park in Ottawa, Kansas. He was born on Thursday, November 10, 1921, in Garnett, Kansas, the son of Andrew W. and Agnes Marie (Ohmes) Lickteig. He lived in Garnett twenty-four years, Washington, D.C. four years, served in the military four years, and was a resident of Richmond fifty-seven years. Donald attended East Scipio School through the eighth grade and earned his G.E.D. He was a rural mail carrier sixteen and one-half years, retiring December 1, 1984, and farmed since 1950. Donald served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II from June 10, 1942, to June 10, 1946, attaining the rank of Corporal. He participated in action against the enemy at Guadalcanal, B.S.I.; Tarawa, Gilbert Islands; and Saipan, Mariana Islands, receiving commendations and citations including Purple Heart, Presidential Citation, and Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ottawa; Knights of Columbus, seventy years, serving two years as Grand Knight; Ottawa Horseshoe Club, twelve years; Lions Club of Richmond; Second Marine Division Association; Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901, Ottawa; Disabled American Veterans; and was an Assistant Boy Scout leader. On Thursday, June 13, 1946, Donald was united in marriage with Mary Jane Lanham in Washington, D.C. She preceded him in death on January 16, 2009. Survivors include; Daughter-Joan Meinhardt of Springfield, Missouri Daughter-Janet Evans of Lawton, Oklahoma Daughter-Kathleen White of Lakewood, Colorado Son-Dennis M. Lickteig of Oakland, California Daughter-Patricia Hettler of Monument, Colorado Son-John Lickteig of Trenton, Missouri Daughter-Elizabeth Bailey of Littleton, Colorado Son-Steven Lickteig of Washington, D.C. Sister-Mildred Peine of Garnett, Kansas Grandchildren-Twenty-one (21) Gt. Grandchildren-Thirteen (13) Donald is preceded in death by his: wife-Mary Jane Lickteig Parents-Andrew W. and Agnes Marie Lickteig Daughter-Mary Diane Hirschfeld Brother-Robert Lickteig Brother-Virgil Lickteig SERVICES: A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa. IN STATE: Mr. Lickteig will lie in state from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa, where a Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. followed by a family visitation at 7:00. CEMETERY: Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, at a later date. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Church or V.F.W.
