Donald Christy 'Don' Kornhaus was born September 20, 1928, at Adrian, Missouri. He was the son of Christian and Edith E. (Addleman) Kornhaus. He grew up in Adrian, lived in Warrensburg, Missouri, during his college years, and moved to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, in 1958, where he made his home until his death Thursday, September 19, 2002, at the age of seventy-three years. Don graduated from Adrian High School with the class of 1946. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and reached the rank of Eagle Scout. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Central Missouri State College (now known as, Central Missouri State University), in Warrensburg. In 1950, his college years were interrupted to join the United States Marine Corps. He fought with the 1st Marine Division during the early parts of 1951 and 1952 in Korea, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received several awards and citations which included the Korean Service Medal with one star, United Nations Service Medal, a Letter of Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon discharge from the Marine Corps, he resumed his college education and graduated from Central Missouri State, as well as obtaining a Master's Degree in Physical Education from the University of Kansas, in Lawrence, in 1964. Don began his teaching career at Adrian High School, where he coached football, basketball and track and taught Math, Science and Biology. The next thirty-one years were spent at Ottawa High School coaching football and track and instructing Physical Education. Following his retirement from Ottawa High School in May of 1989, Don coached football and track at Ottawa University. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church; past member of Warren Black Post #60, American Legion, Ottawa; Ottawa Lodge #803, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and, former member of the National Guard. On April 23, 1954, Don was united in marriage with Shirley Sedoris at Kansas City, Missouri, who survives of their home. Also surviving are three sons, Chris and Kit of Ottawa, Curtis and his wife, Mary, of McPherson, and sister, Marylee Haynes and her husband, Jim, of Moberly, Mo. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Beulah Stark. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Ottawa University Chapel, 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2002 . With Military Honors by the United States Marine Corps. OFFICIANT: Marvin Ross. IN STATE: Mr. Kornhaus will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 9:00 a.m. Monday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening.
