David W. Helmick, age 65, of Pomona, Kansas, died Wednesday, June 9, 2010. He was born on Saturday, October 28, 1944, in Verdon, Nebraska. He was the son of George and Ruth (Burns) Helmick. He was a resident of Pomona since 1986, moving from Ottawa, Kansas. He had also lived in Falls City, Nebraska most of his life prior to moving to Ottawa. David graduated from Falls City (Nebraska) High School with the class of 1963. Since 1982, he was a heavy equipment operator working for several companies including Mitchell Construction in Ottawa. He had worked as a utility man for Commodore Homes in Falls City, Nebraska, fifteen years; and, in the 1970’s and 1980’s, was a meat cutter for Missouri Beef in Rockport, Missouri, ten years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Ottawa; Heavy Equipment Operators Local No. 101 of Kansas City, Missouri; and former member of Ottawa Lodge #803, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. On Saturday, May 10, 1986, David was united in marriage with Margaret Scott in Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of their home. SERVICES: A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Ottawa at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2010. IN STATE: Mr. Helmick will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, where a Rosary will be said at 6:30 Friday evening, followed by visitation from 7:00 to 8:00.
