DAVID ELLIOTT JOHNSON, 82, of Lawrence, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Funeral services will be held at Dengel & Son Mortuary, 2:00 P.M. Friday, June 14, 2013. Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Johnson at Dengel & Son Mortuary after 9:00 A.M. Thursday, to the service hour where the family will meet with friends from 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Thursday. Interment will be held at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas, with Masonic Services by Ottawa Lodge #18, A.F. & A.M. and Military Honors by the Kansas National Guard. David was born in Joplin, Missouri. He was the son of Clarence T. and Nellie I. (Elliott) Johnson. David was a longtime Topeka, Kansas resident moving there from Ottawa, Kansas. He graduated from Ottawa High School. He attended Ottawa University and was a graduate of Southern Police Institute. David was united in marriage with Peggy Sue Smith in Ottawa, Kansas. She preceded him in death on July 15, 1993. Survivors include three daughters, Connie Packard and husband Mark of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Johnnie Buck and husband Allan of Eudora, Kansas and DeEtt Hobbs and husband Bruce of La Cygne, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Rick, Michael and Pepper Clutter, Jennifer Longhofer, Jordan Buck, Tanner Carlson and David Hobbs; eleven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. David was also preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Clyde Johnson. He was a fifty year law enforcement professional from 1953 to retirement in 2003. He began his career working for the Ottawa Police Department; continuing with the Attorney General’s Office as an Investigator; was the former director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and Director of Security for the Kansas Racing Commission. David served twenty years in the National Guard of Ottawa retiring as Captain in 1969 and was Battery Commander of the 127 Field Artillery. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Ottawa; 32nd Degree Mason of Ottawa Lodge #18, A.F. Arab Shrine Temple of Topeka; Scottish Rite; and Kansas Peace Officers Association.
