Danny LeRoy Everson, 69, of Gardner, Kansas, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016, at the Olathe Medical Center Hospice House. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Mr. Everson will lie in state at the mortuary from 9:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 3, 2016, to service hour where the family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Tuesday. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Danny was born Friday, October 18, 1946, in Ottawa, the son of Russell and Velma (Wallace) Everson. He was a near lifelong resident of Ottawa, also living in Lawrence, and Woodward, Oklahoma. In 2015, Danny moved to Gardner. He attended Hawthorne Grade School and graduated from Ottawa High School. Danny served in the United States Army during Vietnam from 1965 to 1971. In 1979, he enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard. He was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, and 127th Field Artillery. He received the National Defense Service medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal, and the Army service ribbon. Danny was recognized by the secretary of defense for promoting peace and stability during the Cold War. He retired with the rank of sergeant in the year 2000, with 26 years of service to his country. Danny was united in marriage with Carolyn “Sue” Scott October 23, 1993, in Princeton, Kansas. She preceded him in death October 13, 2013. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Velma Everson. Survivors include his stepson, Andy Rhoades and wife Michelle of Gardner; siblings, Donald Walker and wife Mary, Clinton Everson, and James Everson all of Lawrence; five grandchildren, Abby, Russell, Chandler, Joel, and Andy; three great grandchildren, Noah, Easton, and Aubrey; and many nieces and nephews. Danny was employed for many years at the Lawrence Paper Company. In the mid 1990s, he worked as a press operator for the Amarr Garage Door Company of Lawrence. From 2005 to 2010, he also worked as a press operator for The Woodward News of Woodward, Oklahoma. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5901 of Ottawa. Danny was an avid fisherman who enjoyed fishing for bass, walleye, and crappie. He also loved to watch any type of sports; his favorite being, KU basketball, Royals baseball, and the KC Chiefs football.
