Danny was born on February 21, 1947, in Merwin, MO to the late Clarence and Opal Rankin. He was raised in Louisburg, KS and graduated from Louisburg High School in 1965. Soon after, he was drafted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country from March 1966 to February 1968, when he was honorably discharged. During his time in service, he was stationed in Germany.
Danny married Kay “Cunningham” Rankin on July 13, 1969. Together they shared a son, Leon Rankin. They divorced in 1988; however, they remained close friends sharing dinner every week on Sunday until she passed in 2020.
Danny was employed by General Motors shortly after returning from the army. Having previously served, GM was more than excited to have him on board, hiring him the same day he applied. Thirty years later he retired from GM in 1998.
He had a lifelong membership to the American Legion, and enjoyed sharing a beer or three with close friends. Danny enjoyed building and painting derby cars, riding motorcycles, and target shooting/hunting. In later years he was somewhat of a couch potato, watching his favorite shows. These included NCIS, Hallmark, and EVERY televised sporting event known to man.
Danny was very easy going, reserved, and quiet. He was very kindhearted and showed that in his love for his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. His love and generosity knowing no bounds. Helping anyone he came across, from close friends and family to complete strangers.
Danny was preceded in death by three brothers, Cliff Rankin, Charlie Rankin, and Norman Rankin.
He is survived by his son, Leon Rankin, daughter-in-law, Lonny Rankin, grandson, Luke Rankin, sister, Barbara Macoubrie, brother, Don (Nancy) Rankin, sisters-in-law, Betty and Janie Rankin, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made payable to the American Legion Post 250, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, P.O. Box 669, Louisburg, Kansas 66053.
