Dale Loren Burns was born October 26, 1932, at Ottawa, Kansas. He was the son of Arthur and Vaughn (Channel) Burns. Dale was a lifelong Franklin County, Kansas resident, until his death Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at the age of seventy-one years. He attended Franklin County schools. He worked for Hercules Sunflower Ammunition Plant, in DeSoto, in the 1950's; as a batch plant operator for Hayes Transit Mix, in Paola, twenty-two years in the 1960's and 1970's; and, twenty years on the cab assembly line for Ottawa Truck, retiring in 1998. Dale served in the United States Army in 1952 and 1953, during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Corporal. While stationed in Korea, he was a cook. Mr. Burns attended Ruhamah Baptist Church in Rantoul. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901, of Ottawa, and Teamster Union #838, of Kansas City, Missouri. He enjoyed the outdoors, caring for his lawn, trees, and garden. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He raised all kinds of poultry and enjoyed hatching eggs. He liked to cook and tinker around the house. His greatest enjoyment, however, came from his family and grandchildren, all of whom he dearly loved. In August of 1961, Dale was united in marriage with Opal Illene Ledom at Harrisonville, Missouri. She preceded him in death on June 20, 1998. He is also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Rezin Burns, Clarence Burns; two sisters, Thelma Hopkins, Carolee Borman; stepson, Frank Couts; and, grandson, David Couts. He is survived by three sons, Bill Burns and his wife, Dawn, of Rantoul, Bob Burns, of Ottawa, Randy Burns and his wife, Debra, of Ottawa; stepdaughter, Sandra Warren and her husband, Darrell, of Vassar; two sisters, June Crocket of Eureka, California, Norma Brock of Ottawa; thirteen grandchildren; and, thirteen great-grandchildren. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 24, 2004, with military honors by V.F.W. Memorial Post #5901. OFFICIANT: Rick Hicks. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Burns at Dengel & Son Mortuary after 1:00 p.m. Thursday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Thursday evening.
