RESIDENCE HISTORY: She was a lifelong Ottawa resident, except for living one year, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri. EDUCATION: Babe graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1942. OCCUPATION & BUSINESS: In 1942, she worked for Scott`s Five & Dime Store in Ottawa. From 1942 to 1986, she was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, working in Ottawa, Lawrence, and Topeka. She began work as a telephone operator. During her employment, she attained the positions of Clerk of the Wire Chief and Wire Chief. She was one of the first women working for Southwestern Bell to assume a man`s employment position. MEMBERSHIPS: She was a member of United Presbyterian Church in Ottawa. She was a lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers of the Northeast Division,which included charity work benefiting disabled children. She was also active in her charity work with Kansas City orphanages. MARRIAGE: On August 31, 1944, Babe was united in marriage with Lewis Bell at Coffeyville, Kansas. He survives of their home. SERVICES: Memorial services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary, 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Rev. Henry A. Robert, Jr. IN STATE: Mrs. Bell has been cremated. Friends may call at Dengel & Son Mortuary to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Friday evening. CEMETERY: Private burial will be held at a later date at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas.
