Cloice Len Shepherd

December 7, 1932 — April 8, 2022

Cloice was born on December 7, 1932, near Pomona, Kansas, the son of Len John Shepherd and Dorothy Mae (Powers) Shepherd. He was born and spent his entire life on the family farm where on April 8, 2022, he passed from this life surrounded by his family. Family will meet with friends from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Central Cemetery, rural Pomona. He graduated from North Illinois Grade School before staying home to help on the farm. He was a farmer all his life but also had a knack for mechanics and completed a correspondence mechanics course. He owned and operated Shepherd’s Garage & Blacksmith Shop in Pomona for 42 years. He could diagnose what was wrong with a vehicle or piece of farm equipment just by listening to it. You could describe the noise or problem and he could tell you what needed to be done. If you couldn’t find a piece you needed, Cloice could make it for you. He worked on everything from freightliners to rubber boots. Cloice was united in marriage to Roberta Faye Reed July 1, 1951, at Greenwood Baptist Church, Pomona, Kansas. They were happily married 69 years and made their home together on the family farm. Roberta preceded him in death on July 10, 2020. Cloice loved to tell stories and had a sharp vivid memory of events, people, vehicles and farm machinery. When you saw his onery grin you knew he had been up to something or about to tell a good story. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Len and Dorothy Shepherd; and two brothers, Len John Jr. and Ralph Shepherd and his wife Roberta. Survivors include four daughters, Wanda Sue (Dan) Heins, Terri Hower, Carolyn Shepherd, and Betty Greer all of Pomona; brother Gerald Shepherd of Pomona; six grandchildren, Danielle (Tyler) Watts, Melissa (Josh) Walker, Corey (Cheryl) Hower, Zach (Bridget) Brown, Gene (Kayla) Greer, and Heather (Cody) Hendershot; thirteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and numerous special ones that call him Toodley and Gramps. The family suggests memorial contributions to Northwest Fire District c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
