Clayton L. "Sam" Conrad, age 80, of Osawatomie, Kansas, died July 23, 2013 at Life Care Center in Osawatomie. Sam was born February 26, 1933 at Parker, Kansas. He was the second of three children born to Lafe and Theresa Conrad. He grew up in Parker and graduated from Parker High School with the Class of 1951. He served his country in the United States Army. Sam worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor. He began working for the railroad in 1972 and retired in 1993. Sam was married to Alveta Holloman in November of 1956. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of four children. They were divorced in 1974. Sam and Janet (Lloyd) McDowell were married December 31, 1981. They made their home in Osawatomie until moving to Paola for a short time after the flood of 2007. Sam was a kind man who didn"t know a stranger. He loved visiting with people. He was a bird watcher. He enjoyed putting up bird houses, but had no mercy on any unwanted intruders such as starlings. He also liked to hunt. A meticulous yard was a must on his list of priorities as Sam prided himself in having a well manicured yard. Another one of his hobbies was traveling. He and Janet enjoyed many road trips in their RV and riding their Gold Wing motorcycle with Janet holding on tight. He was a member of the Cross Point Assembly of God Church in Paola. His church was very important to him and he lived his life for the Lord. He was also a member of BPOE #921 in Osawatomie. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Dorothy Barker, and one step-son Kevin McDowell. He is survived by his wife Janet of the home; four children Regina Gross (Aaron) of Parker, Russell Conrad of Osawatomie, Renee Ross (Mike) of rural Paola, and Randy Conrad (Shawna) of Osawatomie; one brother Tom Conrad (Pat) of Garnett; four step-daughters Kristie Sams (Jerry) of Overland Park, Kimberly Dial (Kevin) of Paola, Kerry Ford (Fred) of Overland Park, and Karla Debrick (Ken) of rural Paola; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
