Claude Andrew Sluder

Claude A. 'Shorty' Sluder, 62, Homewood, died Thursday, January 24, 2008 at his home. Services will be Monday, January 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. He was born October 16, 1945 at Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mary (Good) and Claude Arthur Sluder. Shorty's childhood was spent in Missouri, Idaho, California, Oregon, and Kansas. He moved to Waverly, Kansas in 1958 and to Williamsburg in 1961 where he graduated high school in 1964. Shorty joined the Navy Reserves in 1963 and went to active service in July, 1964. He was honorably discharged in July, 1966 attaining the rank of E-4. During that time he was stationed at NAS Oceana and aboard the USS Independence, which served the Atlantic Fleet and then moved on to the South China Sea. He was proud to have served his country. Shorty's love of the outdoors kept him in the construction field most of his working years. He was last employed by Holliday Sand & Gravel of Bonner Springs, Kansas as a heavy equipment operator, and retired from IUOE Local 101 in 2006 because of health problems. He chose several fields of hobbies over the years which he avidly pursued; horseshoe pitching, hunting, fishing, golfing, and just generally enjoying a good time, which was best started in 'early' morning. He was a member of the NRA and Elks Lodge #803. On May 28, 1964 he married Ann (Fisher) Sluder. She survives. Born to that union were two daughters, Juanita Sleichter and Jeannette Gilkey. Shorty was very proud of of his precious daughters and enjoyed his sons-in-law, Steve Sleichter and Gerald Gilkey, and his grandchildren, Heather Sleichter, Rachel Sleichter, Meghan Gilkey and Remington Gilkey. Survivors also include brothers, Arthur 'Corkie' Sluder and wife, Tammy of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, Charles 'Chuck' Sluder of Ottawa, and Rick Sluder of LeRoy, Kansas. Special cousins raised as brothers and sisters: Marie Crooks and husband, Harold, of Waverly, Kansas, Bill Owen and wife, Geri, of Ottawa, Thelma Russell and husband, Jack, of Galena, Missouri, Tom Owen, and Donald Owen and wife, Wanda, of Leavenworth, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law, Lewis and Georgia Fisher. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2008. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Sluder after 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Dengel & Son Mortuary, where the family will meet with friends from 2:00 - 3:00 Sunday afternoon. The casket will remain closed. CEMETERY: Mt Hope Cemetery, Williamsburg, Kansas.
