Chester Arnold Furrow

September 13, 1917 — February 22, 2002

Chester Arnold Furrow was born September 13, 1917, at Waynolka, Oklahoma. He was the son of Harry Perry and Christa Bell (Spafford) Furrow. For several years, he lived in Riverside, California, moving to Topeka, Kansas, in the early 1970`s and Lawrence, Kansas, in 1988. In April of 2001, he moved to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, where he made his home until his death Friday, February 22, 2002, at the age of eighty-four years. He was a lifelong self-employed plasterer. Mr. Furrow served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was an expert craftsman who loved building and constructing just about anything out of wood. He made beautiful doll houses for his grandchildren, as well as full-size houses, swimming pools, barbecue grills, wishing wells, etc. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, always growing a variety of vegetables. He also enjoyed watching western movies and reading Louis L`Amour books. On June 2, 1941, Chester was united in marriage with Georgie May Ahlborn in Reno, Nevada. She preceded him in death on July 6, 2001. Also, preceding him in death are his parents and two brothers, Jim Furrow and Carl Furrow. He is survived by four daughters, Christa Krantz of Las Vegas, Nevada, Vonnie Slayton of Valliant, Oklahoma, Jessie McWhorter of Granite Falls, Washington, Irene Williams of Ottawa; two brothers, Harold Furrow of Leeds, Utah, Alvin Furrow of Yuma, Arizona; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and, one great-great-granddaughter. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 25, 2002. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Pastor Mike Conn, The Apostolic Church, Topeka, Kansas. IN STATE: Mr. Furrow will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 3 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday. CEMETERY: Hope Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorials to Midland Hospice, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
