Charles Richard 'Charlie' Mason was born July 25, 1932, in Franklin County, Kansas. He was the son of Henry and Carrie Dora (Marks) Mason. A lifelong Franklin County, Kansas resident, Charlie made his home in Ottawa, until his death Monday, February 2, 2004, at the age of seventy-one years. He was employed as Manager with Union Gas Company, Ottawa, over twenty-five years. For the past thirteen plus years, up to the time of his illness, he was self-employed hauling water. He also drove a milk truck for Mace Bulk, Inc., Ottawa. Charlie served as a Corporal in the United States Marines from October 30, 1952, to November 4, 1954. He was stationed in San Diego, California. He was a former member of Ottawa Lodge #803, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and former board member of Greenwood Community. Charlie enjoyed hauling water to his customers and visiting with his many friends. He was very devoted to his family and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities. He also liked to go to the Uniontown football games his son coached. On March 26, 1950, Charles was united in marriage with Alyce Mae Hogelin at Ottawa. She preceded him in death on September 1, 1991. He is also preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Michael Wayne Mason; and, brother, Henry Mason, Jr. Charlie is survived by his son, James Mason and his wife, Peggy, of Uniontown; four sisters, Pauline Arb of Melvern, Shirley A. Bulgarelli and her husband, Vince, of Ottawa, Mabel Lee and her husband, James, of Balch Springs, Texas, Ella Mae Wynn and her husband, Larry, of Ottawa; four brothers, William J. Mason and his wife, Grace, of Topeka, Robert E. Mason and his wife, Judy, of Burlington, Louis Mason and his wife, Carol, of Ottawa, Elmer Mason of Ottawa; three granddaughters, Carrie O'Brien, Heather Palmer, Jamie Mason; three great-grandsons, Gavin O'Brien, Lane Palmer, Colton Palmer; and, aunt, Betty Lou Sumner and her husband, Pete, of Garnett. His first great-granddaughter, Mason Ann O'Brien, is due in March. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 5, 2004. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Pastor Kenneth Maldonado. IN STATE: Mr. Mason will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 1:00 p.m. Tuesday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Wednesday evening.
