Charles Ray Gilkey

June 24, 1938 — February 9, 2006

Charles R. Gilkey, 67, Williamsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at the Richmond Care Center. He was born June 24, 1938, to Joseph Virgil and Bessie Sarah Rebecca (Freeman) Gilkey at Muldrow, Okla. He married Harriet N. Knight April 28, 1961, at Harrisonville, Mo. She survives. He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965, serving in Korea, and attaining the rank of Spec. 4. He earned his GED while he was in the Army. He lived in Williamsburg 28 years, moving there from Quenemo, where he had lived 20 years. He also had lived in Topeka and Lebo. He was a truck driver for Wolken Oil in Garnett and Ottawa from 1984 to the mid-1990s; and was a welder and ranch hand and was a transport driver for Lybarger Oil, Garnett, for eight years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Quenemo Baptist Church, a former mayor of Williamsburg and served as a Williamsburg City Council member and town marshal. Survivors also include his children, Gerald R. and Jeannette Gilkey, Wellington, and Doyle W. and Staci Gilkey, Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Meghan Gilkey, Remington Gilkey, Austin Gilkey and Matthew Gilkey; sister, Earline and Randol Toole, Gideon, Mo.; three brothers, Virgil and Ola Gilkey, Dexter, Mo., Roy and Nola Gilkey, Gideon, and James and Cecilia Gilkey, Byhalia, Miss.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Sue Allen and Evelyn Gilkey; and a brother, Wiley Eugene Gilkey. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2006. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Gilkey at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5:00 p.m. Sunday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Monday evening. CEMETERY: Oak Hill Cemetery, Quenemo, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorials to Charles Gilkey Memorial Fund, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
