Charles Edward Shaffer

Charles Edward 'Chuck' Shaffer was born on Friday, April 23, 1915, in Baldwin City, Kansas. He was the son of Charles E., Sr., and Dora (Jones) Shaffer. A lifelong resident, Chuck made his home in the Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas area, until his death on Sunday, February 12, 2006, at the age of ninety years. For several years, Chuck worked in home insulation, retiring in 1974. In the 1940's, he worked at Ross's Mill in Ottawa. For many years following retirement, he enjoyed working as a wrangler at Camp Chippewa. Chuck loved the outdoors and horseback riding. He was a kind man who cared about people and all animals. He enjoyed taking care of his horses and dogs and even took care of the birds. Chuck was very proud of his family and especially enjoyed their family gatherings. On June 5, 1937, Charles was united in marriage with Martha Elizabeth Silverthorne in Ottawa. She preceded him in death on June 24, 1988. He is also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Lee, Harry, Ralph and Jack Shaffer; and three sisters, Edith Collins, Fannie Cordill and Della LaCount. Mr. Shaffer is survived by his son, Stephen R.Shaffer of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; son and daughter-in-law, Gary R. and Grace Shaffer of Vassar, Kansas; son and daughter-in-law, Ernest E. and Annie Shaffer of Keller, Texas; sister, Cleda Shepherd of Hilmar, California; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2006. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Shaffer at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Wednesday evening.
