Charlene M. Shepherd

Charlene M. Shepherd, 96, of Jenks, Oklahoma, formerly of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2016. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, September 24, 2016, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Mrs. Shepherd will lie in state from 11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M., Friday, September 23, 2016, at the mortuary. Interment Lane Cemetery, Lane, Kansas. Charlene was born Friday, April 30, 1920, in Lane, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Elmer and Estella Fern (Coulter) Bump. She was a longtime resident of Lane, moving in the 1940s to Ottawa, and in 2013 Charlene moved to Jenks, Oklahoma. She graduated from Lane High School with the class of 1937. Charlene was united in marriage to Elmo Lee Shepherd, Sr. March 24, 1940, in Paola, Kansas. He preceded her in death January 16, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Estella Bump; and son, Charles Shepherd. Survivors include her son, Elmo Shepherd, Jr. and wife Judy of Lawrence; four grandchildren, Melissa Wood and husband Bryan of Jenks, Oklahoma, Randy Shepherd and wife Fallon of St. Petersburg, Florida, Barry Shepherd and wife Tiffany of Mission, and Mark Shepherd and wife Kristina of Eudora; ten great grandchildren; niece, Barbara Iskra of Aurora, Colorado; and nephew, Richard Bump and wife Linda of Boulder, Colorado. Charlene was a devoted, lifelong homemaker and also worked at JCPenney and Kramer Drug Store both of Ottawa, and Sunflower Ammunition Plant. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ottawa, a volunteer for the Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Pinochle Club. Charlene loved her family and the time they spent together. She enjoyed playing the organ, cooking, was an avid shopper, and attending the Demolition Derby.
