Carol was born on October 29, 1934 in Linn County, Kansas to Millard Wiley and Opal (Hauser) Mathews. She is a lifelong resident of the area, graduating from Parker High in 1952 and attended Kansas City Missouri Business College. On September 1, 1954, Carol was united in marriage to Max Dean Chitwood . They made their home in Osawatomie, Kansas. She has worked for the Great Western Insurance Company out of Canada in Kansas City, Missouri, she started at Osawatomie Graphic in September 1954 to 1956, worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital as a Switchboard operator from 1955 to 1956, returning to Osawatomie Graphic in 1960 working as a society editor, reporter, photographer, and eventually News Editor, retiring in December of 2008. She also worked part-time at Willard"s IGA and the Flamingo Drive-In Restaurant. Carol was a member of the First Baptist Church of Osawatomie, former VFW Auxiliary, Pride Committee, Miami County Hospital Board, Chamber of Commerce, Brownie and Cub Scout Leader and involved with the PTA. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, her daughter Cindy Cossairt who died Wednesday, June 7, 2012, and one sister Opal Lucille Johnson. Survivors are one brother Philip Mathews and his wife Juanita; her children Joe Ellis Chitwood and wife Sue of North Platte, NE, son-in-law Terry Cossairt of Columbus, KS., Michael Dean Chitwood and wife Christy of Colman, SD, and Cara Maxine Chitwood of Osawatomie, KS.; 8 grandchildren Penni Sue Kosmicki, Joey Dean Chitwood, Amy Christine Chitwood , Mathew Jacob Chitwood, Max Howard Morang , Molli Rebecca Chitwood ,Taylor Jo Chitwood , Mariah Susanne Chitwood; 10 great grandchildren Brittni Kosmicki, Tanner Kosmicki, Jason Kosmicki, Ashley Kosmicki, Kanyen Chitwood, Boadie Chitwood, Kaylee Morang, Ashley Ratterree, Sydnee Morang, and Haily Chitwood. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. Memorial contributions can be made to the Miami County Cancer Foundation or Hospice Care of Kansas.
