Carlos C. Cole, 73, of Linwood, Kansas, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2021, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa Family will meet with friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the mortuary. Interment Lane Cemetery, Lane, Kansas, with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Carlos was born November 18, 1947, in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of John and Vera (Burnett) Cole. He grew up in the Rantoul area, moving to Lawrence, and in 1980 he moved to Linwood. He graduated from Richmond High School with the class 1965. Carlos served in the United States Army during Vietnam, from January 1967 to December 1968, during the time of the Tet Offensive, attaining the rank of Specialist 4th Class. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and several service medals. Carlos was very proud of his service. On June 21, 1972, Carlos was united in marriage to Joyce Martin in Rantoul. Carlos and Joyce just celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. She survives of the home. Carlos was a machine operator for 43 years with Lawrence Paper Company. He began his career with the company upon returning from Vietnam in 1968 and retired in 2011. He was a member of the Ruhamah Baptist Church. Carlos enjoyed traveling, cruises, fishing, history, sports and watching movies and TV. He deeply loved his family and his favorite activities always centered on spending time with them and attending the grandchildren’s sporting events. He was preceded in death by his parents who he loved and admired. Survivors also include three children, Shawn (Joseph) Timm of Tonganoxie, Kansas, Dana (Marsha) Cole also of Tonganoxie, and Kimberly (Eric) Henderson of Davis Junction, Illinois; two sisters, Johnaver Johnson of Rantoul, and Nola May Herman of Ottawa; six grandchildren, Colton (Bethany) Timm, Cami Timm, Cadence Cole, Conner Cole, Gage Henderson, and Elizabeth Henderson; and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorial contributions to Linwood Library c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
