Carl Gump

Carl Frederick Gump, 92, long-time resident of Paola, KS passed away at Good Samaritan Care Center, Olathe, KS, June 16, 2008. He was born at Fulton, KS on October 4, 1915 to Frederick Norris Gump and Carrie Bell Standeford Gump. He graduated from Fulton High School, Fulton, KS in 1933. He received a B.S. degree in Business with minors in mathematics and industrial arts from Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg, KS in 1941. He was drafted into the Army in May, 1942 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. and joined the 79th Infantry Div. at Camp Blanding, Florida in October, 1942. He was in active duty from 1942-45 during World War II. He spent 22 months in the States and 22 months in Europe. He came out of the army as Captain. He joined the National Guard in 1948 and retired in 1969 after commanding the 127th field artillery battalion in Eastern Kansas. He retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was married to Beth Carlile Siron at Fulton, KS on August 21, 1941. They moved to Elk City, KS where Carl was a teacher and coach. After his military service they returned to Pittsburg, KS where he completed a Master"s degree in Business in 1946. From 1946-48 he was a teacher in the Business Dept. at Paola High School. From 1948-58 he was Principal of Paola High School. In 1958 he became Supt. of Schools of Paola and U.S.D. 368. In 1970 he retired from school work and became Vice President of Miami County Nat"l Bank, now Team Bank in Paola, KS. He remained active at the bank until he was 90 years old. He is survived by Beth, his wife of 66 years, daughter Carla Beth Hanson and husband William Hanson, Jr of Omaha, NE, sister Frieda Crane of Ames, Iowa and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Regna Fuchs of DeSmet, Idaho. He was a member of Paola United Methodist Church and many civic and professional organizations. He was well known for his warm sense of humor, his love of people and his community service. He loved the outdoors, hunting, traveling and spending time on the family farm. He continued to keep in touch with his fellow World War II service members at annual reunions for more than 50 years. Visitation is Friday, June 20 from 6-8 p.m., Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl, Paola, Kansas; Service, Saturday, June 21, 10 a.m., Paola United Methodist Church, 209 S. Silver, Paola, burial with Military Honors following service at Paola Cemetery.
