Carl L. Courtney, age 53, of rural Osawatomie, Kansas, died December 24, 2013 at North Point Skilled Nursing in Paola. Carl was born October 26, 1960 in Paola, Kansas. He was the youngest of three sons born to Wayne L. and Janice J. (Hopkins) Courtney. Carl grew up in Paola and graduated from Paola High School with the Class of 1979. Carl and Carol Wheeler were united and became the parents of one daughter. They made their home in the Beagle Community. Carl had worked for Green Country Soil and had also been employed by Miami County. While working for Miami County, Carl was a tire repairman, road grader operator, inmate supervisor, and also worked for the highway department. Carl was a very active member of the Miami County Fair Board and Saddle Ridge Trail Riders. He loved horses and had a team of half lingers. He thoroughly enjoyed time spent with family and friends. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and twin step granddaughters Jazzmen and Miranda. He is survived by his wife Carol of the home; two daughters Laura (David) Schlesener of Osawatomie and Stacy (Jeremy) Eastman of Princeton; son Charles (Jessica) Little of Osawatomie; two brothers Rick (Donna) of Osawatomie and Joe (Marsha) of Paola; 18 grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Carl"s Hope memorial fund at First Option Bank or sent to Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 605 O"Neal Ave., P. O. Box 280, Osawatomie, KS, 66064.
