Byron Edward Figgins, age 96, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Sunday, November 14, 2010, at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka, Kansas. He was born on Tuesday, November 18, 1913, in Pomona, Kansas, the son of Charles and Lula (Smith) Figgins. Byron lived in Pomona, Ness County, south of Quenemo, rural Franklin County, and moved to Ottawa in 1954. The last five years, he lived with his daughter in Topeka. He graduated from Quenemo High School with the class of 1933. Byron worked as a farmer; at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant; and for thirty-seven years as a heavy equipment operator for the Kansas State Highway Department, retiring in 1979. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Ottawa and the Odd Fellows. On August 31, 1940, Byron was united in marriage with Letha Dehn in rural Quenemo, Kansas. She preceded him in death October 13, 2005. They celebrated sixty-five years of marriage. He is survived by his: Daughter-Geri Sue Bauman and her husband, Jim, of Topeka; Sister-Ruby Broyles and her husband, George, of Waverly; Brother-Lee Figgins of Pomona; Sister-Peggy Weiss of Ft. Worth, Texas; Granddaughter-Cindy McQuillen and her husband, John, of Wamego; Granddaughter-Debra Braun and her husband, Steven, of Hutchinson; Grandson-Steven Bauman and his wife, Rhonda, of Topeka; Gt.Grandchild-Kaleigh Braun; Gt.Grandchild-Rebecca Braun; Gt.Grandchild-Benjamin Braun; Gt.Grandchild-Joshua Bauman; Gt.Grandchild- Jordan Bauman and Many Nieces & Nephews. He is preceded in death by his: Wife-Letha Figgins; Parents-Charles and Lula Figgins; Brother-Rankin Figgins; Brother-Forrest Figgins; Brother-Marlin Figgins and Sister-Vada Bachelor. SERVICES:Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church in Ottawa at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 18, 2010. IN STATE: Mr. Figgins will lie in state from noon to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at Dengel & Son Mortuary, where the family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening. CEMETERY: Woodlawn Cemetery in Pomona, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorial contributions to First Baptist Church, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary 235 S. Hickory in Ottawa, Ks 66067.
