Betty Virginia Barrett

Betty Virginia Barrett, 72, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at Olathe Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at Dengel & Son Mortuary, 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 24, 2014. Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Barrett at Dengel & Son Mortuary after 1:00 P.M. Thursday, to the service hour where the family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Interment Wilmington Cemetery, Harveyville, Kansas. Betty was born on Wednesday, October 1, 1941 in Eskridge, Kansas, the daughter of Chester and Melva (Price) Henderson. She has lived in Ottawa since the late 1960’s, moving from Harveyville. She graduated from Harveyville High School with the class of 1959. Survivors include her two children, Virginia Baker and Kevin Barrett both of Ottawa; four grandchildren, Dustin Baker and Mellissa Baker both of Ottawa, Ricky Baker of Lawrence, and Brandon Malone of Ottawa; two great grandchildren, Isaiah Baker and Alanna Rhoades; siblings, Mary Slade and husband Bill of Harveyville, Bob Henderson and wife Janice of Topeka, Don Henderson of Shawnee, Kansas, and Jim Henderson and wife Linda of Hutchinson. She was preceded in death by her parents. Betty worked as a waitress for many years, working for the Hill House Café, Horseshoe Café, Windmill Café, and the Antique Mall. She also worked as a receptionist, later promoting to case manager, for Ottawa Social Rehabilitation Services from 1959 to 2005. She later worked for Independence Inc. of Lawrence and Ottawa, as a job placement coordinator, from 2004 to 2011. She was a former member of the Harveyville United Methodist Church. Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, grand and great grandchildren, gardening, cooking, and watching American Pickers and sports. She also loved being with her dog, Roxie.
