Betty Shaffer

Betty Jo Shaffer was born June 15, 1939, in Franklin County, Ottawa, Kansas. She was the daughter of John Roderick and Ruth Estalene (Sellers) Allen. A lifelong resident, Betty made her home in Ottawa, until her death Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at the age of sixty-four years. Betty graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1957. She also received nurse's aide training at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. She was a lifelong homemaker. She was also a nurse's aide at Ransom Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of the Church of the Brethren in Ottawa for many years. She sang in the choir, served on the flower committee, and was always the first one there to provide food when needed. More recently, she attended Ruhamah Baptist Church in Rantoul. Betty accepted Christ as her personal Savior and continued to love and serve Him until the time of her death. Betty was a lovely lady, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her friends and her community. On February 9, 1958, Betty was united in marriage with Merl Raymond Shaffer, they were married in her home in Ottawa, Kansas. He survives of their home. She is also survived by her daughter, Darla Dianne Brown and her husband, Galen, of Pomona, Kansas; three sons, Evan Eugene Shaffer of Ottawa, Robert Allen Shaffer and his wife, Barbara, of Parkville, Missouri, Raymond Lee Shaffer and his wife, LaVerne, of Springfield, Missouri; two brothers, Jack Franklin Allen and his wife, Shirley, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Richard Travis Allen and his wife, Sandy, of Osage City, Kansas; ten grandchildren, Angel Maxwell, Bryan Shaffer, Breena Shaffer, Kaden Shaffer, Kaleb Shaffer, Kamryn Shaffer, Kristen Shaffer, Hunter Thompson, Dustin Thompson, Cori Brown; and, one great-granddaughter, Amaia Maxwell. She is preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2003, at First United Methodist Church, Ottawa, with interment at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mrs. Shaffer will lie in state at Dengel & Son Mortuary from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Friday. Family will meet with friends from 7 to 8:00 Friday evening at First United Methodist Church. The family suggests memorial contributions to Midland Hospice, Ruhamah Baptist Church, Franklin County Cancer Foundation, or Hope House of Ottawa, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S.
