She was the oldest of nine children born to Louellen and Nettie (Russell) McKinney. She graduated from Osawatomie High School. They became the parents of six children. Betty had worked as a nurse"s aide in California and Paola. In 1955, the family moved from the Beagle, Kansas area to Santa Barbara, California. Betty traveled with her five children on a train with her sewing machine. Frank was anxiously waiting there for them. Her current residence in Drexel, Missouri had been home for the past 20 years. Betty chose not to participate in any women"s groups as she wanted all her spare time spent with her family.
