Betty J. Sutton

Betty J. Sutton, 95, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at Rock Creek of Ottawa. A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Family will meet with friends from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M., prior to the service. Interment at Garnett City Cemetery in Garnett, Kansas. Betty was born January 21, 1926, at Richmond, Kansas, the daughter of Wilbur Porter and Lela Belle (Baber) Duffey. She lived in Richmond and Garnett in Kansas; Dallas, Texas and Kansas City before moving to Ottawa, Kansas in 1972. Betty graduated from Richmond High School in Richmond, Kansas, with the Class of 1943. She was a member of Ottawa First United Methodist Church, Oxford Service Forum Sunday School Class and Chapter AU, PEO. On December 28, 1946, Betty was united in marriage with Lionel Sutton at Richmond, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 6, 2007. Betty worked many years alongside her husband, Lionel in their family business, Sutton’s Jewelry in Ottawa. She loved decorating her home and setting a beautiful table for special holiday dinners. Betty played the piano, liked to dance, skate, ride bikes, and play ball. She also enjoyed mowing the yard (with a push mower). She was also preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Lela Duffey. Betty is survived by her sons, Douglas A. Sutton and wife, Linda of Paola, Kansas and Philip Sutton and wife, Cathy of Ottawa; daughter, Marna Riddle and husband, Butch of Ottawa; four grandchildren, Jay Riddle, Lucas Riddle, Kelsey Ainsworth, and Ian Sutton; five great grandchildren; and nieces, Jean Apperson, Ann Reeder and Barbara Hills.
