Betty J. Baer, 85, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at her home in Ottawa, Kansas with her family by her side. Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be held at Dengel & Son Mortuary, 6:00 P.M., Friday, January 31, 2014. Family will meet with friends following the service. Interment Evergreen Mound Cemetery, Ottawa, will be held at a later date. Betty was born on Friday, March 16, 1928 in Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter of Kenneth and Dorothy (Riddle) Andrews. She was a lifelong Ottawa resident. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1946. On June 16, 1946 Betty was united in marriage with Robert “Bob” Baer in Ottawa, Kansas. He survives of their home. Other survivors include her three children, Glenn “Andy” Baer and wife Jean of Ottawa, Kathy Ford and husband Charles of Olathe, and Julie McReynolds of Kansas City, Missouri; three grandchildren, Angela West of Lawrence, Shanda Baer of Ottawa, and Ally Ford of Olathe; and a great granddaughter, Meghan Rice of Lawrence. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Karen McCrea. Betty was not only a devoted lifelong homemaker, she also worked as a soda jerk for Hill Drug Store, Ottawa in the 1930’s and 1940’s; receptionist and clinical assistant for Henning Medical Clinic, Ottawa from the mid 1940’s to mid 1950’s; owned and operated the Unique Antique Shop, Ottawa in the late 1960’s to early 1970’s; owned and operated Rock Café, Ottawa in the 1970’s; she was a cook for a sorority house at Baker University in the early 1980’s; cook at Wellsville Manor Nursing Home in the late 1980’s; and truck driver for Morgan Drive Away, Kansas City, Missouri in the early 1990’s. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Ottawa. The family suggests memorial contributions to Olathe Medical Center Hospice c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
