Bessie Marguerite Johnson

May 7, 1914 — February 10, 2008

Bessie Marguerite Johnson was born on Thursday, May 7, 1914, in Mansfield, Missouri. She was the daughter of Arthur and Maude (Vining) Hogle. Traveling in a covered wagon, Bessie moved from Missouri to Franklin County, Kansas, where she made her home until her death on Sunday, February 11, 2008, at the age of ninety-three years. Bessie was a homemaker. She also worked as a department clerk for Scott's Five & Dime and nurse's aide in the O.B. Department of Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa for twenty-three years, retiring in 1976. She enjoyed rocking all the children born at the hospital in the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's. She had a strong Christian faith and was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church in Ottawa; Jolly 60's Club at Calvary Baptist; and Richter's Ladies Aide at Richter United Methodist Church. Bessie's greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family and grandchildren. She always had delicious cookies baked for everyone. She loved caring for her cats and, in her leisure time, enjoyed sewing and needlepoint. On March 16, 1937, Bessie was united in marriage with Marvin Johnson in Pomona, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 19, 1951. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son, Wayne Johnson; brother, Bob Hogle; and great-granddaughter, Courtney Anderson. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Nancy Johnson of Ottawa; grandson, Tim Johnson and his wife, Missie, of Bentonville, Arkansas; two granddaughters, Susan Frank and her husband, Jeff, of Palatka, Florida, Cathleen Anderson and her husband, Jeremy, of Overland Park, Kansas; and five great-grandchildren.
