Bernard David Smith, 73, of Osawatomie, Kansas passed away on May 22, 2015 at Olathe Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born June 19, 1941 in Jersey City, New Jersey the oldest of four children to Edward and Beatrice Smith. He moved to Illinois in 1956 and graduated from Thornton High School in 1959. He worked for various companies working on business machines before becoming a foster parent for 25+ years. In 2008 he moved to Paola, Kansas to retire. He was an avid reader with Stephen King being his favorite. He also enjoyed playing golf and coaching little league in his younger days. He loved to watch the New York Yankees and the San Francisco 49ers. He was joined in his second marriage to Judith (Simac) Smith on August 20, 1976. He was a loving husband for 38 years and a proud father and grandfather. He was the kind of man that would help you however he could, not only a loving but a giving man. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Beatrice Smith, aunt Ruth Fitzgerald, aunt May Curran, grandson Gabriel Smith and his in-laws Frank and Jan Simac. He is survived by his wife Judy Smith; two brothers Edward (Kathy) Smith, Bill (Marcia) Smith; one sister Pat Heber; three children Douglas (Loretta) Smith, David (Michelle) Smith, Julie Brandt; two step-children Kim Tucker, David (Chris) Tucker; multiple foster children; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
