Berenice Benz Hastings Conner, 90, a life time resident of Paola, passed away April 7, 2009, at the Ottawa Retirement Village, in Ottawa, Kansas. Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Thursday, April 9, 2009, at the Paola Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Midland Hospice, of Ottawa, Kansas. Berenice was born April 27, 1918 to William & Minnie Debrick Benz, in Miami County, Kansas. Berenice grew up in the Paola area, and attended school at the First Lutheran School, and later graduated from Paola High School, with the class of 1936. She was united in marriage to Bert Hastings in 1938. To this union, three children were born, Ernest Hastings, Charles Hastings, and Donna Ray. This marriage later ended in divorce. In 1970 she was married to John Conner of Overland Park, and he passed away in 1980. Berenice was a life time member of the First Lutheran Church. She was a braille worker, as well as a member of the quilting group, for several years. Berenice, is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Charles, great grand daughter, and one sister Dorothy Tarr. Berenice is survived by her daughter, Donna Ray, son Ernest Hastings, both of Osawatomie, Kansas, 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren. She will be missed by many.
