Barbara D. Queen

October 6, 1935 — June 9, 2018

Barbara D. Queen, 82, of Paola, Kansas, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday June 9, 2018. Visitation will be 5 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at the Lighthouse Presbyterian Church, 1402 E. 303 St., Paola, KS. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at the church followed by a family graveside at Woodland Cemetery, Mound City, KS. Barbara Brown was born October 6, 1935 to Omer F. and Nellie Brown in Mound City, Kansas. She was raised primarily in Mound City, but moved often growing up, as her father was a civil engineer for the List and Clark Company, so the family followed him wherever his large projects were located. She graduated High School in Manhattan, Kansas in 1953. She attended Kansas State University after high school. Barbara was united in marriage to Jim Queen on July 10, 1955 while he was in the United States Marine Corps. They lived in North Carolina before settling in Kansas City and then Paola in 1974. They worked together operating their Queen’s Price Chopper stores. Her survivors include her husband, Jim Queen of Paola; sister Gay Douglas of Paola; two children, Jayme Morris and her husband Tommy of Paola and Barry Queen and his wife Kim of Paola; five grandchildren, T.J. Morris and his wife Sarah of Olathe, KS, Taryn Morris of Olathe and Trenton Morris of Paola, Paige “Queen” Hahs and her husband Russell of Spring Hill and Dylan Queen of Overland Park; and their beloved dog, Haley. She was preceded in death by her parents Omer and Nellie Brown. Barbara’s first love was her husband, her children and her grandchildren. She never missed a sporting event they played in, nor a school event they were involved in. Her second love was the retail grocery business, she was totally committed to their Price Chopper stores her whole career which lasted until just recently. She is best remembered by those that knew her as the caring and gifting Barbara. She supported every charity event that exists and helped those in need without ever asking to be recognized nor repaid. Her warm heart touched so many people, whether she knew them well or not. Barbara loved watching sports, going to the Casino and collecting antiques and collectibles. Barbara was a member, and former elder of the Lighthouse Presbyterian Church in Paola, KS. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Lighthouse Presbyterian Church children and youth program or Olathe Health System Hospice, c/o Dengel & Son Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl Paola, KS 66071. To leave a special message for the family online, please visit www.DengelMortuary.com.
