Avanelle Knight Martin "Grandma Train" passed to life in the spirit on July 14, 2009. Avanelle was born May 16, 1936 in Amarillo, Texas to Howard Knight and Irene Ethridge Knight. Avanelle met Al, her husband of 56 years while living in California. Al and Avanelle married on December 6, 1952 in Temexico in the state of Morelos in the United States of Mexico. Their wedding in Mexico was so much fun they married again in Artesia, CA. Avanelle wore many hats in her life including nurse aide, bookeeper, and personal care attendant. The role she loved most was that of devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Despite an injury that left her right hand paralyzed, Avanelle was a gifted artist who dabbled in taxidermy, played the organ, and loved to paint, sharing many of her paintings with family and friends. Avanelle was a member of the Elm Grove Baptist Church in Wagstaff, KS and enjoyed many years as a member of the Wagstaff Social Club. Preceding her in death were her husband Al, mother and father, stepfather John Haug, brothers Billy and Bobby, and a sister Barbara. Survivors include three sisters Betty Woodmansee, CA, Beverly Archer, CA, Pat Covington, IN, three half-sisters, Donna Niles, OR, Diane Kratochavil, FL, and Debbie Knight, three half-brothers Don Knight, Dan Knight and David Knight, all of TX, four children " Katherine Skeens of Osawatomie, KS, David Martin and his wife Gael of Spring Hill, KS, Terri Humphreys of Paola, KS, Miles Martin and his wife Amy of Enterprise , KS, 10 grandchildren, Jason Nation, Jamie Gregg, Shawn Laudan, Rachael Kelly, Adam Martin, Jennifer Laudan, Sarah Martin, Bridget Martin, Shannon Martin, and Miles Martin, II, 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday, July 17 from 6:00 " 8:00 PM at Penwell-Gable Funeral Home and Chapel in Paola, KS. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 18 at Penwell-Gable Funeral Home and Chapel in Paola, KS. Interment at Wagstaff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances to Olathe Medical Center Hospice
