Arthur Duane Blackburn, 84, of Richmond, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 in the comfort of his own home.
Arthur was born June 18, 1939, in Homewood, Kansas as the only child of Ernest Arthur and Lois E. (Shaffer) Blackburn. He grew up in Homewood before graduating from Williamsburg High School.
After high school, Arthur enlisted with the United States Coast Guard. He traveled all around the world working in the engine room and doing search and rescue during his time in the service. Arthur proudly served his country for over 20 years before retiring with the rank of Master Chief. During his time in the Coast Guard, he was honored to receive many service medals, awards and decorations.
Arthur was united in marriage to Claire M. Daley on Tuesday, November 19, 1963, in Seabrook, New Hampshire. They were happily married for nearly 57 years and had four children.
After his retirement from the military, Arthur started his own plumbing company, Art’s Plumbing and Service.
He was a man that loved sharing tales of days gone by and experiences in the Coast Guard. Arthur took immense pride during his service. Arthur also enjoyed shooting competitions and peaceful drives down the country roads. Above all, his heart overflowed with love for his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Claire Blackburn, parents, Ernest and Lois Blackburn, and granddaughter, Cassondra Blackburn.
Arthur is survived by four children, Kenneth Blackburn of Wichita, Arthur E. 'Bud' Blackburn of Richmond, Sharon Blackburn (Robert Garrett) of Garnett, and Ricky D. Blackburn of New Mexico; five grandchildren, Kristen M. (Justin) Sanders of Overbrook, Jessica (Tylor) Wyatt of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Zane Blackburn of Wichita, Brittney Stanturf of Iola, and Kaitlyn Blackburn of Wichita; and five great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, February 9, 2024, at Dengel & Son Mortuary- Ottawa, 235 S. Hickory Street, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
Graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Williamsburg, Kansas.
