Annie Lee Sommer, 85, of Cottonwood Falls, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018, at Chase County Care & Rehabilitation Center. Family will meet with friends from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M., Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Graveside services will follow at 11:00 A.M., Thursday at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Annie was born Saturday, October 15, 1932 in Quinton, Oklahoma, the daughter of William Andrew Jackson and Dovie (Carter) Wimberly. She lived in Ottawa, from about the age of fourteen and moved to Emporia in 1999. In 2016, Annie moved to Cottonwood Falls. She attended schools in Oklahoma. Annie was united in marriage to Earl Arthur Sommer in 1953. They were later divorced. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Dovie Wimberly; two brothers; Charles Johnson and Otis Wimberly; and five sisters, Nonnie Pearlene Johnson, Callie Mae Bell, Sally Griffin, Rosa Scott, and Elizabeth Nichols. Survivors include her son, Frank Sommer of Lawrence; daughter, Lisa Burlingham; two grandchildren, Jonah Burlingham and Kylie Mowell and husband Paul; great granddaughter, Bailey Mowell; brothers-in-law, Jim Nichols of Emporia and Clarence Scott of Pomona; sister-in-law, Joan Wimberly of Sun Valley, California; and seventeen nieces and nephews. Annie worked in her early years at area restaurants. For 10 years, she was employed at USD 290 Lincoln Elementary in the school lunch program before her retirement. She was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene in Ottawa. The family suggests memorial contributions to Parkinson’s Foundation c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
