Ann E. Baber was born April 9, 1919, at Walnut, Kansas. She was the daughter of Alfred and Sadie (Umphenour) Ellis. She grew up in Walnut and Hepler, Kansas. She later lived in Ft. Scott. In 1953 she moved to Larned, Kansas, moving in 1972 to Ottawa, where she made her home, until her death Thursday, July 24, 2003, at the age of eighty-four years. Ann graduated from Hepler High School with the class of 1937. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Larned State Hospital for 18 years. In the 1970's she worked for C.O.F. of Ottawa, retiring in 1978. She also helped manage the bowling center in Ottawa for several years. She was a member of the Women's Bowling Association , Eastern Star of Hepler, Kansas, and a devoted volunteer for the Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, receiving her 5000 hour pin. Ann loved to travel. Everywhere she went she made a friend. She made it a point to never miss any of the grandkids sporting events. She also enjoyed her embroidery. It was a frequent gift for her family and friends. A lot of Ann's time was devoted to the auxiliary. She always enjoyed helping the people. Most important in her life was her family which she loved dearly. On July 4, 1937, Ann was united in marriage with Russell Baber at Nevada, Missouri. He preceded her in death on February 24, 1998. Also preceding her in death are her parents; three brothers, David Ellis, Ben Ellis, and Roy Ellis; and one granddaughter, Tammy Conard. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Wolken and her husband, Michael of Ottawa; a granddaughter, Kim Booton and her husband, Bruce of Pomona; a grandson, Tim Conard and his wife, Kim of Ottawa; four great grandchildren, Tommy Martin, Ilse Conard, Winifred Conard, Thomas Booton; and several nieces and nephews. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2003. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Rev. Jimmie L. Treat IN STATE: Mrs. Baber will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5 p.m. Saturday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 6-7 Sunday evening.
