Amy May Howell was born on Monday, October 4, 1937, in Ottawa, Kansas. She was the daughter of Henry and Lois (Barker) VanLoenen. A lifelong Franklin County, Kansas resident, Amy moved from Ottawa to Pomona in 1968, where she made her home until her death on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at the age of seventy years. Amy graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1955. In the 1970's, she worked as a seamstress for H.D. Lee in Ottawa. In the 1970's and early 1980's, she was head cook for U.S.D. 290 Lunch Program, and elementary head cook for U.S.D. 287 Lunch Program in the late 1980's and 1990's, retiring in 1997. She was a member of Richter United Methodist Church. Amy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She lovingly participated in her children's activities, including cub scout leader, block mother, and volunteer for Bible School. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, sewing, crocheting, reading, camping, fishing, and traveling south for the winters. She was also an avid fan of K. U. basketball. On November 25, 1956, Amy was united in marriage with Donald L. Howell in Ottawa, Kansas. They celebrated nearly fifty-two years of marriage. He survives of their home. Amy is also survived by two sons, Robin Howell and his wife, Shirley, of Vassar, Kansas, John Howell and his wife, Kenna, of Euharlee, Georgia; three daughters, Veronica Bowman of Olathe, Kansas, Martha Mundy and her husband, Butch, of Scranton, Kansas, Sarah Wilson and her husband, J. R., of Ottawa, Kansas; three sisters, Lois Louise Brooksher and her husband, Bob, of Wichita, Kansas, Becky Chapman and her husband, Dean, of Lawrence, Kansas, Ferne Keeny and her husband, Gene, of Kansas City, Missouri; brother, Alan VanLoenen and his wife, Gail, of Lawrence, Kansas; fifteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Henry 'Bud' VanLoenen, Jr.; and three sisters, June Huyett, Evelyn Schwarting, Joan Detwiler. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2008. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Howell at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 10:00 a.m. Friday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7:00 to 8:00 Friday evening. CEMETERY: Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorials to Franklin County Diabetes Association, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
