Allen Lee Shumate, age 78 of Ottawa, Kansas, died Monday, February 11, 2013. He was born on Saturday, April 7, 1934, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Samuel and Evelyn (Hale) Shumate. Allen has lived in Ottawa since the late 1940’s moving from Kansas City, Missouri. He attended schools in Kansas City and Ottawa. On December 23, 1955 Allen was united in marriage with Gertrude Eva Schumann in Topeka, Kansas. She survives of the home. He is also survived by two sons, Lee Shumate and Jeff Shumate and wife Nancy both of Ottawa; sister, Marie Nichols of Olathe; brother, Raymond Shumate and wife Karen of Ottawa; three grandchildren, Amy Williams and husband Anthony, Joshua Shumate and Linda Shumate; two great-grandchildren, Madelyn Williams and Brylin Langston; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Allen in death are his parents; infant brother, and brother, Charles Franklin “Sammy” Shumate. Allen worked for H.D. Lee Company as a machine repairman; Hercules Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant as an instrument technician and monitor; and Dodson International Parts, Inc. where he procured many salvaged airplanes throughout the world. In 1952, at the age of seventeen, Allen enlisted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. He attended First Christian Church Ottawa; was a former member of the Masonic lodge; when he was younger he was in the Order of DeMolay, an international youth organization for young men. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 of Ottawa. Allen’s interests included firearms, airplanes and military history. He coached little league baseball and enjoyed coffee time with his friends, “The D.Q. Gang”. SERVICES: Funeral Services will be held at Dengel & Son Mortuary, 10:00 A.M. Friday, February 15, 2013. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Vassar, Kansas, with military honors by V.F.W. Memorial Post #5901.
