Allen Edwin Hawley was born on Monday, August 28, 1916, in Vicar Switch, Virginia. He was the son of James A. and Hester Ann (Crisman) Hawley. Allen lived in Virginia from 1916 until moving to Ottawa, Kansas in 1933. He moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1975, returning to Ottawa in 2000, where he made his home until his death on Sunday, December 24, 2006, at the age of ninety years. Allen graduated from Rhiner High School, Rhiner, Virginia, with the class of 1933. He was a member of Mt. Tabor Methodist Church in Christiansburg, Virginia. He owned and operated Al's Garage in Ottawa for about thirty years, and worked ten years for St. Petersburg Times in St. Petersburg, Florida, before retiring on February 28, 1993. He taught several young men his mechanical skills including, the late Pastor Weber. In his spare time, Allen enjoyed fishing; especially, in the Gulf of Mexico. On June 30, 1937, Allen was united in marriage with Doris D. Travis at Lyndon, Kansas. She preceded him in death in February of 1972. On January 2, 1973, he was united in marriage with Arvilla Maxine (Gray) Fivian at Ottawa, Kansas. She preceded him in death on October 12, 1998. On April 9, 2004, Allen was united in marriage with Lois (Barkley) Houston. She survives of their home. He is also survived by two sons, Larry Dean Hawley of Edgerton, Kansas, Donald Gene Hawley of Lawrence, Kansas; sister, Helen Diamond of Ottawa, Kansas; four stepsons, Jim Fivian of St. Petersburg, Florida, Alvin and Marion Houston of Ottawa, Edward Lee Houston of Chicago, Illinois; three stepdaughters, Nancy Matejcek of St. Petersburg, Florida, Elizabeth Joy Foushee of Ottawa, Debbie Curtis of Chanute, Kansas; four step grandchildren, Michelle Villars, John A. Fivian, Brian C. Matejcek, Michael A. Matejcek; and five step great-grandchildren. Mr. Hawley is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Merle Pease, Louise Coen, Gay Burgess; and brother, Leslie Hawley. SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2006, followed by visitation. IN STATE: Cremation is planned. CEMETERY: Inurnment will be in Highland Cemetery at a later date.
